Nice to see...

...the megapixel arms race might finally be over

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0908/09081908canong11.asp

Winding back from 14.5MP to 10Mp certainly seems to be a tacit admission that the last few rounds of development have been steps in the wrong direction - or perhaps consumers have started to show they're actually caring about pic quality and low-light performance.

G11 looks rather nice, now they've put the swivel screen back. If I had a spare £500....

Price hikes!

Thought it was my imagination at first - but just had a quick look at camerapricebuster.co.uk to confirm and photographic equipment prices are going up again.

Looks like we picked the right time to buy Toby - lowest prices last year and everything is shifting up again now. SB600 for example: best price currently is almost £180...I got mine for less than £150 at least two years ago now.

D300 with 18-70, not even VR, is now more expensive than what I paid for mine with the 16-85VR.

Assume it's thanks to the weak pound and Yen - plus recession woes.

Suspect I won't be investing in anything new for quite a while if prices continue to do this!

Some semi on-topic stuff and some very off-topic stuff

1. For more fanboy entertainment, see the current reaction to the 50D review over at dpreview, almost as much fun as the Nikon tribe's chest beating after the D90 review. Anyone else thinking Dpreview have painted themselves into a corner somewhat by refusing to rate any DSLR below "highly recommended"?

2. Am I getting it wrong by writing f/8, rather than f8, or even F8?

3. Toby - possibility of new Doctor soon AND news Blakes 7 is being remade for Sky 1...are you managing to contain your inner nerd?
